Fun-O-Ween!

We had a FUN afternoon during Fun-O-Ween!  Students dressed up in costumes and we rotated through different classrooms for lots of fun activities! There was freeze dance, musical chairs, and pin the spider on the fly. A few more Included Halloween themed bingo, spooky story corner, eye ball toss, and witch hat ring toss. The students had a lot of fun and all looked fantastic in their costumes! Trick-or-Treat!

Pajama Day

Here are a few shots from our pajama day!
We celebrated all the hard work we have been doing during reader's workshop by reading with stuffed animals during read to self and partner reading.  We also got cozy at the end of the day during a read aloud!

Reader's Workshop

The first graders in our room have been doing lots of work (and reading) to build life long habits of readers!  It is truly evident in all of their progress!  We have learned that readers build good habits, that readers use good habits for solving hard words, and that readers use these habits for reading in partnerships. This week, these readers have spent time thinking and talking about habits that they have become really good at and some habits that they want to keep working on. Today, we set goals to keep these habits in mind and to use them every day without needing to be reminded.  Each student also wrote down one habit that they do every day and feel proud of, and we celebrated them as a class!  We will continue to add these ideas to a bulletin board of our good reading habits.  See the charts below to learn about the habits that we have been working on and a picture of these proud readers with the habits that they have been using every day!

Measuring in Math

In Math, we have been doing a lot of learning! We have been thinking about the relationships between numbers and operations (addition and subtraction), estimating, measuring, creating and solving word problems; and sharing our thinking with each other. Here are some pictures of us measuring, using popsicle sticks. We estimated how many popsicle sticks in would take to measure our partners, and then measured to find out the actual amount. Students enjoyed moving around the room and working with one another to discover the length of their friends, in popsicle sticks.

Greetings from my new blog! Thank you to those of you that were able to make it out for open house at HCS last week.  It was wonderful seeing all of you and having the students show you the work that they have been doing in our classroom.  I will be posting classroom updates on our blog and sharing with you the learning and happenings that are taking place.  Yesterday, the Hinesburg Fire Department was here and spoke with students about fire safety and taught us about the fire trucks.  Our class was able to take a walk through them- they all loved it.  I am working on getting some pics up, so please continue visiting for some more information and updates! Thanks for stopping by!
