Preparing for the journey from Anchorage to Nome!! As we have been following the Iditarod race in Alaska, we have been learning what the mushers must do and bring to prepare for their long 1,000 mile journey. Miss Soucy (our student intern) and I opened up a shop and provided students with money to prepare for their trip. In groups, they decided how to spend their money (wisely!) to survive the trek to Nome. They created posters to share with the class and explained what they would pack in their sled and why. After their presentation, we discussed if the groups would survive. I think almost all of them would have made it, except one that forgot to buy food and bought gum instead!! The kids had A LOT of fun planning for their journey as mushers.
Planning our trips to Alaska, where the weather is cold, but the Iditarod race is HOT!!! We spent time researching the geography of Alaska and what one may do when visiting there. Students got to choose how they would spend their time on a trip to Alaska and made trip itineraries to share with the class. Here are some photos of our kiddos engaged in planning their travels!
